The First Day

Brasil 1999

Rio de Janeiro, 31 de dezembro de 1999. Dois jovens desconhecidos vindos de mundos opostos se encontram no teto de um prédio em Copacabana. João fugiu da prisão e luta desesperadamente para sobreviver. Maria vive uma crise amorosa e existencial e quer desistir de tudo. É nesse lugar entre o céu e a terra que a cidade partida finalmente se
abraça, que a redenção se torna possível - até a chegada do primeiro dia.

Rio de Janeiro, December 31, 1999. Two youths, from totally different backgrounds, meet on the roof of a building in Copacabana. João has escaped from prison and is fighting desperately to survive. Maria is living through a romantic and existential crisis, and has decided to give up everything. It is in this place, between heaven and earth, that the divided city is finally joined, and redemption becomes possible – until the first day arrives.

O Primeiro Dia é a segunda parceria de Daniela Thomas, autora e cenógrafa
teatral consagrada, com Walter Salles - que explora temas como o isolamento, o exílio e a descoberta do outro. Terra Estrangeira, assinado por ambos, recebeu sete prêmios internacionais. Salles dirigiu sozinho, entre outros, o documentário Socorro Nobre e Central do Brasil (1998), vencedor do Urso de Ouro em Berlim 1998 e mais 49 prêmios.

The First Day is the second partnership between Daniela, established theater writer and set designer, and Salles – who explores themes like isolation, exile and the discovery of the Other. Foreign Land, a joint collaboration, received 7 international awards. Salles has individually directed, among others, Socorro Nobre and Central Station (1998), winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin 1998 as well as 49 other awards.
